Not ready for prime time?
I think it's clear that the experience of some developers and users shows that MySQL is indeed ready for prime time--for those applications for which it's suited. And the range of applications for which it's suited is clearly going to expand--theoretical objections about whether it's relational notwithstanding.

I think that a critical weakness of MSSQL is that it runs only on MS platforms. When I worked at MS, I caused an email shitstorm by asking, "just because people want to use MSSQL, why do we also force them to buy a copy of Windows? (i.e. why not port it to Linux like Oracle, DB2, etc, etc)?" You would not believe the arm-waving negative responses. I was a contractor at the time and got warned to keep my head down and mouth shut.

BTW, I've written a modest dbadmin tool for MSDE, in VB, that superficially resembles portions of Enterprise Manager, available at sourceforge.net/projects/kuery. In combination with MSDE, in effect one has a moderately useful free copy of MSSQL.
