MySQL is fast, and that has turned out to be a problem: speed is not the only thing that matters, but MySQL appears to be built with speed as the primary goal. That's fine, unless you want heavy lifting instead of speed. For heavy lifting, PostgreSQL is an excellent, open-source, time-tested alternative. In fact, I think the Postgres project pre-dates the MySQL project, but I could be mis-remembering.

I have supported production, ``mission-critical'' apps on Orace, PostgreSQL, and MySQL. My personal experience is that MySQL is the least capable of the three. I currently have a lot more than four websites running against MySQL. It has its place...

As far as MS SQL is concerned... I've never used it, but some of my Oracle users had come from the MS SQL world. It was pretty much agreed that Oracle was miles ahead of MS SQL, although it has a much sharper learning curve.

Oracle is certainly a beast to administer, but once you get past the learning curve, it is a joy to work with.
