Email could be saved by RSS
E-mail was developed in the days of the ARPANET, when a small group of scholars and scientists were using it to communicate among a trusted circle of civilized people. It was not developed with the intention of protecting it from spam, hackers, etc. because none of those who created it forsaw such heinous behavior.

E-mail is indeed broken, but it could be saved. If more publishers, including ZDNet, offered RSS feeds for their one-to-many communications, their subscribers could be assured of getting their information, with no chance of spam, and the subscribers are in total control of the media they consume.

If all legitimate publishers delivered their information via RSS, it would also be relatively easy to use a combination of whitelisting/blacklisting to secure one-to-one email, and thus leave spammers out in the cold.
