Web 2.0 vs return to retro terminal/ mainframe style computing
The possibility of retro terminal/ mainframe style computing makes this move important. Citrix concepts and virtualization of the PC desktop means Citrix client software or VMware client software is all that is needed on the business PC. The resident operating system product becomes unimportant on the client side.

Its the death of Windows residency on the business PC client because the operating system and related product run as a service on the mainframe just like other software.

When the business PC connects through a network to the newage mainframe, the operating system product is still running on the mainframe at mainframe (not PC) speed. Windows becomes more like the old CICS in this architecture. The PC becomes more like a 3270 terminal. (Citric terminal, VMware terminal)

The alternative is Web 2.0 which is attractive in that it can be applied in a business environment but also in the home environment and in places where network connections are not reliable. Here the operating system and related software is pre loaded on the PC. However, Google style applications are run as a service either through a browser and standard Web 1.0 pages or via the mechanism of the Java Virtual Machine.

A JVM on the client allows all kinds of Web 2.0 that unlike the retro architecture described above, doesn't rely on network connectivity. This includes browser-based applications (applets) and their the-application-is-the-browser sisters - the java applications. Mobile computing can be done with either architecture but Web 2.0 appears superiour because network connection need not be reliable, and mainframe CPU cycles (which are often charged back to the user) are not as great.
