Risky but Good Business
That's long-term smart. Microsoft has an illegal, illegitimate stranglehold monopoly over a lot of the software industry. For free you get the things (stability, security, reliability) that Microsoft software punishes you by denying you. People are relieved of the headaches of Microsoft software on a variety of platforms, and now Sun is in a position to provide continuing services on offering packages for enhancements to mobile phones, Linux desktops, and whatever else. This gets happy consumers returning to their website to see what new, cool things they can get, instead of angry, pissed off consumers being forced to return to patch up whatever else is wrong with their Microsoft crap. Plus, Microsoft loses business, which is better for the entire industry, and Sun gets credit for leading the charge on this particular offensive. I also see the standard being changed by this. Microsoft has set the standard of purposely engineering defective products, and charging for continuing fixes, making software and the tech industry much less profitable for ordinary businesses. With a new face to software, a legitimate buck is easier to make with tech.
