What is the point of having java open sourced ?
1 - to allow faster ports of the JVM to the different OSes around. The best open source license to do this is GPL as it is the license that closes the fewest doors, as you pointed out.
2 - To have the community improve the software. That is a question of how modifications are integrated back into the mainline, and as nothing to do with the license sheme. SO GPL is as good as any other for that
3 - For others to use the software with their specificities by allowing them to (1) adapt the software, and (2) integrate it with their solutions

On that third point GPL has a dogmatic approach stating that only the good fellows - ie the one following the GPL - can take full advantage of the openness. If you want to integrate ( and not aggregate )the JVM with your software, for automation, to take advantage of some of its feature... etc : you cannot.

If i have non GPL software and want to link it with a GPL modified JVM : I cannot. That was my point and only point.
