The real point however is that it wont be possible to package a modified JVM with BSD compliant software because of GPL

False. A GPL'd JVM can, in fact, be packaged with BSD software, both in this case and in others.

1) Sun gives you an exception under the GPL so that any classes you build outside of the base classpath can be under any license you desire.

2) Even the basic GPL would consider the inclusion of a GPL software within a package of BSD to be "mere aggregation". Under GPL V2 such mere aggregation does not cause license primateur.

So, since the grand-parent's "real point" has a false conclusion, what is his real point?
