Different open source licenses exist. GPL specifics is that what you add to the program is not yours anymore. if you make a smallimprovement to it, that small part of it is no more your own, but is the community's.

It's true however that in the opriginal message is a confusion b/w the runtime engine, which is under GPL, and the langage that do not impose licensing restriction. Just like any other GPL language compiler/runtime library, sun proposal will offer a provision to the GPL license to allow packaging with the runtime engine w/o having to release under GPL.

the real point however is that it wont be possible to package a modified JVM with BSD compliant software because of GPL
