I share your optimisim, but...
"With the recent spate of changes in all three branches"
Sorry, but the change has only affected 1 branch so far: the legislature. The Executive and Judicial branches are still very much in the control of the Republican party. Hopefully the Executive branch will also pass over in 2008, and the Legislative branch will see further positive change. It'll be a while, however, before there is any change in the Judicial branch.

I'm not too optimistic about this affecting software patents, though. Unfortunately many of our politicians are just plain ignorant when it comes to technology and software. And most of them, Republican and Democrat alike, are owned by big business.
