Putting Sharepoint in its place you mean
Regardless of what you may have been fed, this article is about disrupter technology for Microsoft's sharepoint portal and related tools that were being relied on to get Microsoft into Web 2.0. Here is what I think happened. Microsoft was well positioned in pure 64 bit Itanium prior to HP's identity theft episode.

The Microsoft company not only had a screeming version of Sql Server 2005 for pure 64 bit but also a set of pure 64 bit tools. This combination boded well for Web 2.0.

But the damaging revelation via the US congress (not via a leak but rather via investigating the identity thefts related to the leaks) that HP had special pricing arrangements with Intel for the Itanium line damaged Microsoft. Consider the following...

Microsoft should have been and likely was expecting Itanium to be used by all hardware manufacturers. But after the congressional investigation, it became unlikely that anyone but HP would use the chips because all others would be disadvantaged on price to HP. Hence all others would and did go multiprocessor multicore.

Recogognize that HP's identity theft was the end of hope held by Microsoft's management of doing anything else but following the rest of the industry and learning how to make money like the rest do.

I am still pondering the news of the Goldman Sacks partner who retired on friday. He had been a key man on Microsoft stock investments and according to the WSJ confirmed the kind of deal going down with Novell and Microsoft. I suspect that Ballmer et all quickly organized news conferences after this confirmation and that the news itself was going to be announced on the 15th (tomorrow) which I think is the Microsoft share holder's meeting.

Thats a meeting to attend for those with no-ax-to-grind. Oh what the heck. I hearby nominate Microsoft and Novell for the IT industry peace price. Let Intel second.
