Clearly this is a big win for Linux and Novell.

MS has a patent sharing with any significant IT player with a
patents library prepared to make an agreement - yet
aggressively fight when they infringe on other patents. They've
also embarked on adding UNIX services to windows, which they
paid SCO (in part to fund an attack on Linux). Now they realise
SCO sold them nothing and the UNIX IP still belongs to Novell.

Novell needed something like this. SLES/SLED 10 is a great OS
but Red Hat gets all the attention. Novell's desktop strategy
requires MS workgroup interoperability much more that Red
Hats more conservative desktop strategy.

Red Hat has no patent library so lives under the patent
protection of IBM - this deal does nothing to threaten this
protection nor the huge antitrust implications of MS going after
Linux companies.

Expect SLES running under windows server as a support VM
image, could make an attractive terminal server given MS's rip-
off CALs.

Linux customers are the big winner here, as we can choose what
solution and from what provider we like.
