Fighting for control of Java
Some companies appear to be impatient to wrench control of Java away from Sun and adapt it more to their own purposes. Even before Sun can sacrifice licensing revenues and largely give away the valuable asset.

Each company's version will be a bit different, even if there's a clearinghouse which keeps them compatible to a degree. Effectively, though, it's a quasi-fork.

.Net is Microsoft's, and one company makes all the decisions and assures compatibility and direction for development of .Net itself.

Advantage Microsoft.
