Shame on "shame on you"
Why do people take such glee in excoriating victims?

So many reports of trojans trivialize the issue by minimizing the social engineering aspects and forgetting just how much damange can be done without that.

It's commonplace among geeks to say something like "_x_ can happen if you run as [root / admin], but if you do, shame on you."

Well, sure. But what if you're not running as root?

What if you're running in user-space?

Well, then, all you can damage is your own user-files. And shame on you if you don't have them backed up. Every time they're changed. You should be mirroring. Offline. In real time. At Iron Mountain. Or shame on you.

And shame on you if you run Outlook. (At all.) And shame on you if you ever load a file by double-clicking (which translates to "shame on you if you use a Mac", after all).

No, it's not a perfect world. S**t happens. But what's constructive about all this "shame on you" nonsense? If the world outside of the geek reality distortion field were driven by this attitude, we wouldn't have seatbelts or airbags.

Geeks need to remember that most wealth-production happens outside of their reality distortion field.
