I never heard either of those mentioned in any article, so I would guess much of what you mention is just speculation based on no facts?

You're right, they're not dumb fools, and neither are MS's competitors. These people don't get picked up by a different company at better pay.
Where do they go? MySQL? Oracle? these companies are doing just fine without them.

I'm sure it has to do with getting rid of positions that are no longer needed, so he was given the choice (as many are) to step down.

I see he is being replaced by someone that jumped ship at Apple, though...
