States push for piece of online sales

Be careful of rip offs!!!!: A couple of years ago I put up a new steel building on my ranch. Total cost was just shy of $20,000 for the building from a vendor two states away. Why did I pick this vendor? He was 15% cheaper than anyone else was.

Sent a truck to pick up the materials and I sent along a check in the proper amount. However the vendor called and said I had not included sales tax for my state. Further they claimed they had to collect sales tax for my state.

I don't know why, I guess there was something to the claim that sounded "strange" so I told them I would remit the sales tax if, and only if, they could produce a copy of a sales tax permit from my state. (My state requires ANYONE collecting sales tax to have one.)

The long and short of it was they did not have a tax permit for my state, had no right to collect sales tax for my state, and I am certain the extra 6.5% would have simply been put in their pocket.

To finish the story, they sold me the materials at the original price quoted and yes I declared it on my tax return as it's a wee bit hard to hide a 60' x 80' steel building from the accessor...
