Loverock, you are kind of a moron when it comes to social issues...
The only way Microsoft would lose millions to billions of dollars is to make the very incorrect assumption that everyone who runs a pirated copy of anything would in fact purchase the product if they couldn't pirate it. That isn't the way life works. If people could not have pirated Windows for so many years, they would use Linux. If they could not have pirated Office for years, they would have used Star Office (when it was free) or OpenOffice.
So the millions to billions "lost" would never have had the chance to be lost.
In fact, had Microsoft had such protections in place before, they would not even be around as a company today. Most companies that had flavors of Windows that did involve anti-piracy measures ended up having that portion of their business go under. Do you remember those days? I do. I used to have a copy of Xerox Windows 3.1 on my Epson 386SX16.

I would wager that Microsoft probably did lose a couple of million to pirates that NEEDED to use their products and would have paid for them if they couldn't pirate them...but to make the implication you do is completely absurd.
