I see a lot of dire predictions for linux...
...around this story. Most of it centers around the potential forking of Linux by Oracle. Did anyone else notice that Oracle also joined the Free Standards Group? Seems pretty insignificant, eh?

Well, there are a lot of big players in that group and they all share a common purpose, to build and maintain the Linux Standard Base. No worry about forking here.

It's pretty obvious that the Windows fanboys are looking for anything they can find to shoot Linux down. They want Linux to go away so that they won't have to compete on the merits of their favorite product. After all, with Linux gone, what is left to compare Windows to?

The problem is, people are attracted to goodwill and Linux has it. Given this, Linux will continue to grow. People prefer transparency and open standards. Microsoft (and it's advocates) apparently do not.

The message I hear from Microsoft advocates is this: Shut up and use Windows. I never hear that from Linux users. They seem quite comfortable with what they're doing and simply offer this: This is what I'm doing, feel free to follow me.

Of course, there are always exceptions to any generalization. I'm sure you can find them. But for now, if you want to predict the death of Linux, you'll have to get in the long line ahead of you and wait your turn.
