Not really open source version of .Net
It is not really open source version of .Net

To be blunt, this is what happens when the story authors get lazy and put in one liners and no links.

It's the Mono project (headed up by Miguel de Icaza), which is _sponsored_ by Novell. Novell did not create it. That was inaccurate.

From the FAQ

"The '.NET Initiative' is a somewhat nebulous company-wide effort by Microsoft, one part of which is a cross-platform development framework. Mono is an implementation of the development framework, but not an implementation of anything else related to the .NET Initiative, such as Passport or software-as-a-service."

"Mono contains a number of components useful for building new software:

* A Common Language Infrastructure (CLI) virtual machine that contains a class loader, Just-in-time compiler, and a garbage collecting runtime.

* A class library that can work with any language which works on the CLR. Both .NET compatible class libraries as well as Mono-provided class libraries are included.

* A compiler for the C# language.
"

Mono is essentially open source C# for all platforms. Mono is a pretty ambitious project and I admire them for doing it. I don't really do any C# stuff, but I have installed Mono on my Linux box and intend to play with it eventually. IMHO it's a better alternative than starting out with the MS compiler, which you can download (for free) a command line only version of the C# compiler or buy the C# package and need to install a bunch of crap on your computer you don't want (like ISS).
