Two sides of this issue
There are applications that are cheaper in a Wintel server than a MF if the amount of data and the resources required can be hendled by the Wintel server. Also programming and changing wintel applications is easier and far cheapr than MF applications. The other factor is client interoperability, especially access to some MF DB2 databases is very tricky from desktop clients.

On the other hand, there are applications that simply can not run on a wintel server because of the amount of data or resources they require.

So, whichever fits best your pocket and political agenda.
