- Java-- reloaded?
-
My first reaction was: this sounds like Java all over again.
Having been a J2EE architect for about 8 years, and recently defected to the dark side (now a .Net junky), I can safely say that while Adobe's Flash ubiquity is set-- I can't see a path for Apollo.
It is disappointing b/c Apollo has great potential.
Also, why are they removing the sandbox that browsers were created to enforce? Java can already access local files through an applet as long as it is signed. Actually, a good programmer can make an AJAX app call through to the applet, and like this have the online/offline nirvana (without Apollo!) that Ryan Stewart (RIA dude) so often writes about in his articles.
Most programmers know this-- but who's done it? Why isn't it widespread? Programmers can make AJAX work with Flash, today, right now, cross platform, within the sandbox... but its not in wide deployment.
How about the sandbox... how many corporate environments do you know of that would allow such a tool to be installed knowing full well that it is only a matter of time before some zero-day exploit wreaks havoc on the O/S (and potentially, their enterprise as well)?
Again, Apollo has promise, but just more of the same that Java had, and while Java has been successful, that success pales in comparison to that of .Net (which is NOT *truly* cross platform!), especialy considering the fairly newness of .Net when compared with Java. - Posted by: kckn4fun Posted on: 10/26/06 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
