Been there done that.....a lot.
For me it lost it's appeal. I gained time and reduced effort by
simply buying a machine that as they say "just worked" out of
the box. As for bundled software? Well the software bundled
with my Mac purchases have been to date pretty nice stuff over
all. Butt maybe that's just me. Also since the MacTels and
Parallels or Boot Camp I can run both OSX and Windows....so my
flexibility is pretty high over all. The trick I find is to purchase a
system with a few years of solid and productive use in mind.
Don't skimp in the begining and you get a system that will last
you a few good years and then upgrade to another.

You can do the build it yourself route and keep adding on in bits
and pieces as time goes on but I'd much rather just use my
computer. Again maybe that's just me.

I've done both and like this way better.
