Oh boy! A new target!
Unfortunately the UI settings programs often do not do the job properly, and its back over to Xconsole and Vi to finish the job.

Xcon and vi? Good lord how far back in time are you?! Just about every single video card out there (including the oddball ones that require a lot of magic get drivers installed) works with standard framebuffer drivers. From there it's a snap to get things working.

Besides, is xorgconfig that hard to use? Answer a few questions and you're in business.

Providing you have a new(-ish) computer that doesn't have anything remotely "different" hooked up to it.

BTW Does the Speedtouch 330USB modem "just work" now? (considering most of the ISP's in the UK are distributing this modem as part of their ADSL package, it's a must here)

Waitaminit... I thought new-ish computers were the problem with Linux. I haven't had any troubles with my "new-ish" systems. My bud's brand new Acer laptop worked, and the ONLY hitch was the Broadcom card. A 20 dollar Intel ABG card fixed that.

As for the SpeedTouch modems... http://www.lrr.in.tum.de/Par/arch/usb/linux-usb/SpeedTouch/

I'll admit freely... no, not every single thing out there will work flawlessly with Linux. Ditto goes for Windows (Try getting XP to like an Intel QX3 microscope. Linux loved the heck out of it. Windows won't do anything but flash the lights). However my point is that driver support is pretty damn decent in Linux, nothing like what Rockie has proclaimed.

As an aside, you use a DSL modem that doesn't have an ethernet port?! Getting it to work with Linux should be the least of your worries at that point.
