Tasks have come a long way since Fedora Core 1.
Most of the issues of which you speak have been fixed in previous revisions of Fedora Core. In truth, Fedora Core Linux would work fine for the majority of non-technical users, who buy their hardware, keep it until it breaks down, and rarely add modifications. Heck, even Wifi on my Dell laptop was plug and go in Fedora Core 4 and beyond.

Users don't want the chore of dealing with kernel panics and segfaults. Or reconfiguring their kernel or recompiling their code.

Very true, which is why there is a robust system of official and unofficial code repositories that support Fedora Core. Select Application->"Add Remove Software" from the main menu (assuming you've ability to become root). Browse the software and add what you want. Even binary only kernel modules can be updated and added this way.

I've not had a segfault except in software I've written myself and yes, all I need do is recompile. However, my situation is hardly normal use - most users just update their software. I'm hoping that someday real-soon-now, the binary-only software authors will begin using repositories as their update strategy.

Or having to tweak config files just to get video to display at proper resolution or to have sound work.

In Fedora Core 6: Select your display resolution in the System->Administration main menu as root. Once the selection covers the screen, people with user level access can set individual resolution with the System->Preferences->"Screen Resolution.

I've not had a real problem with sound since the bug in PAM was fixed in Fedora Core 3. Of course, my sound needs are an 8 year-old sound card. Perhaps modern cards have more difficulties? I don't know.

Loverock, if you want a real complaint, you have to go for unusual situations that effect only a subset of users. Try to configure a Wacom Intuos tablet for pressure sensitivity for the GIMP. That task will require a root to edit the X.org config, close and restart X.org again again and again and then configure the GIMP, which is a hellamess when working with such devices.

Read a complaint about some version of Linux in major media? Chances are that's a problem which is on the slate to be fixed. Hold to the complaint for more than a year and you'll likely sound foolish in your complaint: it's been fixed. That's not to say there aren't still problems, but the ones you note are fixed except for small subsets of users.

When I look at the big picture, there is no compelling reason to use linux at all.

Gnu/Linux is about freedom. Neither the users nor the companies are about "compelling" you to use the software. You propel yourself to use GNU/Linux or sit still and don't use it. You can also stay where you are with desktops that do compel you to upgrade, crossgrade, authorize and authenticate software; we don't mind at all. You can choose another Unix variant, but if you're going after a BSD; you'll still likely need GNU software to run it at some point and again: we don't mind at all.

We do mind if you flame about what's wrong with a specific Gnu/Linux version without having used it extensively. We do mind if you complain about problems largely fixed in modern and current distributions. Of course, one might theorize that you like to annoy people? Not for me to judge.

Now, if you'll pardon me; I'm propelling myself to find a torrent for FC6.
