Their demise predates open source
"Considering that Sun has been throwing away its closed source
product revenues by open sourcing the products, and that
Novell has deemphasized its (good) proprietary software to sell
Linux, the decline could not have been unexpected by either
company."

Both companies revenue decline began before they had an open
source offering Sun from Linux, Novell from windows server.

Netware have been given a new life on Linux (Note: Netware is
still proprietary) but SUSE is the future base of Novell's offering.
Novell has not abandoned propriety software, but has chosen a
mixed offering. Personally I believe this makes sense.
