Sun's recent gains have come from sales of hardware. The profit increase might well have been greater if Solaris had been purchased with the hardware.

You're right, though, that Linux has created problems for Sun and Solaris that would have had an impact even if Solaris had remained proprietary.
I wonder what Solaris's value might have been if Linux had not erupted in the Unix realm. Linux has achieved the damage its proponents hoped to see.

One statement seems ironic:

"Both [Sun and Novell] have growing revenues built around open source and services, whilst experiencing a continued decline in their closed source product revenues."

Considering that Sun has been throwing away its closed source product revenues by open sourcing the products, and that Novell has deemphasized its (good) proprietary software to sell Linux, the decline could not have been unexpected by either company.
