Where's the disaster?
"The company sacrificed $100 million per year in revenues."

Quick check and Sun revenues continue to grow:

2006-q4.html

"Even Sun representatives have said that the hoped-for greater
number of applications will not occur for years. But if Solaris is
not in wider use, those applications will not appear."

Things change and the dot com boom is a fading memory for
Sun. The new competitor on the *nix block is Linux.

Waxing lyrical about the good ole days will not work for Sun nor
Novell. Both have embraced radical change to stay relevant. Both
have growing revenues built around open source and services,
whilst experiencing a continued decline in their closed source
product revenues.

The open source strategy of these companies may not be
successful, however their closed source models was terminal.
Not everyone has a monopoly they can abuse;-)
