1) It's free in price only. But if the code gets freed then the player may be taken in directions that may not be suitable to Adobe's business plans.

2) I didn't suggest an open source player for Windows might lead to an editor, I suggested an open source player period might lead to an editor (though of course if you look at the Gnash development site you will find there IS a working win32 version). Sure it's a bit of a leap, but having a working open source player is a good roadmap to follow. And sure, there are other editors, but how many are free?
