MySQL benchmarks with the best of them
The last time (a few years ago now) that someone was brave enough to risk lawsuits from Oracle and Microsoft, the benchmark results showed MySQL having transaction performance and scalability as good as Oracle, with SQL Server and DB2 lagging behind.

See http://www.eweek.com/slideshow_viewer/0,1205,l=&s=700&a=23120&po=1,00.asp for results.

Of course there is more to selecting a critical infrastructure product than performance and scalability. Support, DBA and development tools, monitoring capabilities, disaster recovery, etc. are also critical factors that need to be considered.

And this may have been the fuel that led to Oracle acquiring a key MySQL component.
