It's obvious why there is a need for this
VMWare's virtual HD is open, open enough for open source emulators to be able to read/write to them and even create new ones.

In fact it is possible to create a VMWare virtual machine that runs on the free VMWare Player using open source products to create the virtual HD and online wizards to create the VM script. With this kind of openness and functionality it tough enough for MS to keep up.
