The ineptitude is in the user
Are you here to say you don't know how to secure a network? Is that all. Well millions of us do and have no problems with Microsoft whatsoever. We've been running server2k3 and xp clients for years now w/o any downtime and only occasional troubleshooting which invariably is a rouge 3rd party program or hardware failure.
All modern operating systems receive regular patches, including the Mac and ubuntu. Who are you kidding?
Try this. It's free: Setup WSUS on your network. Patch distribution a snap. It works remarkably well and is free. Get AVG or other free antivirus software. Use a firewall and perhaps ISA server (we don't use the latter). It's funny when ZDNet releases patch info about Linux and actual infestations the Linux crowd all cries...3rd party software!! It was FF plugin etc. So I guess if Linux ever approaches the amount of flexibility and compatibility as MS, it will only be when every 3rd party product is certified by some new organization to be linux ready?
I realize MS bashing is your job and you are one of the faithful, but these statements are so closed minded that it can't even be taken seriously.
So just for the record, if everyone switched to your proposed desktop/server combo who is going to do the administration. That move alone just added about 10 FTEs to the average shop, lost a ton of flexibility that can be had w/o searching for it and you lose total integration, which is one of the most important aspects of any "system".
