Why mix Microsoft's Passport and DRM strategies?
Because they are obviously related to each other. DRM will not succeed without an authentication broker to decide if you are who you say you are so that DRM can decide if you are allowed to "use" the content.
DRM is about Microsoft making sales to the demented content companies.
DRM is about alot more than media streaming. Expect MS to try to lock up every file on a customers box as part of a "trustworthy
" computing solution. They will sell the service of allowing the files to be opened by authorized users and it potentially extends all the way down to the boot image of the OS ... read up on Gates own prgnostications ... why do you think they are trying to get PC makers to put new HW into the PC architecture ... look at their efforts to control what SW is run on XBox ... big brother wants to own you!
Passport was about the sale of a service to merchants. Looks like that model isn't going to work, so Microsoft will make mostly internal use of Passport concerning permissions.
Passport was a failure because MS is overreaching and truly believes it can force the world into its stable. Unfortunately, not too many folks trust them, they are now reduced to buying partners, at least they got a bunch of dollars to spread around ... too bad the biggest threat (Linux) is not up for sale. They have bought off the competition for years ... how do you buy off OSS?
And why would you think Microsoft has the slightest interest in becoming a Unix company at this late date?
I didn't say they wanted to become *NIX. In fact I said the opposite, MS needs a channel into the Linux market, and if they are going to do Linux they might as well give up the religion and go where the big bucks still are spent in big iron UNIX. Sun can get them into both markets and create a royalty stream which is what MS really wants, or they can ignore Linux and see their cash flow evaporate - or maybe it won't. Business usually don't roll the dice wit their future if they can hedge their bets.
Solaris will find its niche, but big, expensive Unixes are hardly going to be predominant.
Sun already owns this segment, its far from threatened by MS - maybe by IBM & HP but Sun brings MS into this space if they play their cards right not the other way around. And perhaps you missed the fact that companies still buy obsolete mainframe technology ... hmm, maybe cheap is as cheap does? - Posted by: oldskool Posted on: 04/08/04 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
