Customers using product is a good benefit
MS is at a turning point ... either the anti-trust is going to get harsher or they will change their ways. Its obvious to most that the battle is over control of the media using "trustworthy computing" & DRM. Since MS has very little take up on Passport it will be difficult for them to use it to establish themselves as the certificate authority for DRM. They lost the ability to leverage WMP on the player side. So, strategy #3. Work with the rest of the industry to insure they can participate in the digital economy going forward using Liberty. In exchange, Sun would position MS's DRM technology as long as Sun was alloed to play as the big iron server. Sun has never viewed its SW as the cash cow (big mistake IMO) so as long as they are not locked out by MS they know how to share ... they can teach MS a few things in that department. Besides, with the failure of Passport and Windows2003 in the security arena MS needs credibility in the "trustworthy" department and Sun is just about the best partner for them there.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Sun simply license Solaris as the core of post Longhorn high end Windows and simply live off their HW and royalty stream on the IP. If they can get MS to license the OS IP they stand to make more than if they stay an OS competitor who gives its IP away with the HW.
