Look at the synergies if barriers are eliminated
First MS collases Passport (which is a failure) into Liberty and we have a cross platform indentity broker.

Second Sun implements MS's collaborative server and gives Sun a scalable platform using Office clients and driving Sun big iron "web tone" servers as the collabotation engine.

Third MS backs off on File Format churn, discloses Office XML features under royalty agreement and OO gets to play in the collaborative office suite for a "fee" - perhaps derived from selling server time rather than client seats (who pays for the client every year anymore ... Sun's per emp[loyee model actually is being well received).

Fourth MS plays in the Sun heterogenous enterprise infrastructure management vision since the big obstacles are all solvable with royalty dollars.

Fifth the customer benefits, and say good by to trying to hide the MS security problems, leave em on the client where they can be managed and abandon the dream of owning the Enterprise ... the Windows are glass not shirinkwrap!

I would not be surprised to see Sun drop Solaris if MS plays its cards right ... they would be alot more profitable if they could lose the cost of having to move the OS forward and just focus on adding value to Windows and Linux which is easy if they just decide to do it! A merged Windows GUI on SOlaris CORE would be a killer win/win for both companies.
