Maybe...one can hope...
China is certainly changing; from everything I'm hearing, be they reports from expats or conversations with mainlanders I meet, it seems that the changes are dramatic and intense, and that there's much, much more freedom of movement, choice, and information flow than there ever was before.

But the same government is still in charge, and they will not give up their social controls easily. And again, from what I'm hearing, the Chinese people don't necessarily want them to. Remember the bad days of the 19th and early 20th centuries.

The communist period was certainly a dark time. But only a clueless free-market zealot would deny that China came out of them stronger than it went in. Whether they'd have done better under Chiang is Monday-morning quarterbacking; the fact is they're strong now, they're learning fast, and they won't again make the same mistakes they made in the 19th century.
