It doesn't HAVE to take over the world
All most people really want out of Linux is another option. I don't honestly think it can obliterate Windows off the face of the earth, and quite frankly I don't care. I just want it to provide sufficient competition to Windows to give me a second option and to scare MS into making Windows better.

And seeing as Linux is now my primary OS at home and MS is taking serious steps to make their OS better and more secure, I'd say the mission has already been accomplished. Anything more is just gravy.
