Yes, VERY stupid to pay more then you have to.
Use Linux / OpenOffice only to get discounts if you want, no problem. But, do be very energetic with your pilot tests, learn everything you can. And, do not use the free stuff that Microsoft throws at you. It locks you into millions in yearly license payments, with no hope of getting a discount. Look at other comercial alternatives that do not lock you in. Make sure everything you use interoperates and is replaceable with products from other venders, or is open source. You will be in the drivers seat when it comes to negotiating with Microsoft (and others).

THIS IS JUST GOOD BUSINESS SENSE, NO RELIGION.
