You make a point
Injuries to the neck are far more serious. Shooting yourself in the foot slows you down. It might be a little painful to move forward, but eventually you regain momentum.

Injure your neck, and you could stop yourself cold, instantaneously, and possibly forever.

In my opinion, Linux right now is a tinkering OS. Those who like to tinker and play around can use Linux and feel comfortable. But those who are serious about things are looking for a serious OS, and that is one image the Linux market has yet to successfully pin down.

Microsoft has been serious from the start, which is why they've been able to succeed. Plus when you have long-time Microsoft software users around, they're not going to want to switch, because any switch will cost money and *a lot* of time, and that lost time will always cost more than the initial purchase.

Let's say your salary amounts to $200 per day. Purchasing Microsoft Office amounts to about two days' salary, while OpenOffice is free. But what if you've been using Microsoft Office for years and know it hand and foot? Now which is suddenly more expensive? You guessed it, the free option.

The same is going to be with Linux. You put Linux in front of someone who's never heard of it, and what's going to be the first question? "What happened to [insert software name here]?"

That is one obstacle that Linux will not be able to overcome, no matter how fast they're moving. The prospect of Linux taking over the desktop may seem great, but it's like shooting a .50 cal sniper round into a swimming pool -- it'll be met with a lot of resistance.

(And if you don't know what I mean with the .50 cal and the swimming pool, watch MythBusters.)
