I'm from Canada where fileswapping in legal. Also more people in Canada per capita have broadband service and swap files. Yet in Canada there has been a an increase in sales of CDs. While it is true that the CD retail shop is suffering the wake of the big discount box stores selling CDs for much less but more CDs are being sold today that anytime before. Now I've seen stats showing less money is comming in but it's only common sense if you consider that CD are selling for about $4 less than they were a year ago.

So basically what you have is boycot, economic downturn, and less music to buy causing the losses in the US.

The whole suffering due to P2P is a smoke screen. It's not real. It's like boogie man.

The RIAA is fuming because they are loosing control of market. They know law makers will not write laws to maintain the music cartel so they manufactured a piracy issue. Sure piracy was there and still is but it hasn't changed and is no more a threat today than it was 10 years ago.

Do you believe it is right that a cartel of corporations controlling who can create, promote and distribute music by controlling the means of creation, promotion, and distribution? Should they be allowed to manufacture hype to get laws passed that meet thier agenda?

I think this issue is more about freedom than it is about copyright infringement. That freedom being the freedom to listen to what you like. Corporation only want you to listent to what will make them money.
