Compulsory licensing
what's your idea for a proper response from the "den" folks?

The "den" folks are making a predictable and entirely self-serving response. Tis to be expected. What is not expected, in fact what is a departure, is Congress' response.

New technologies always have upset the status quo. Everyone points to radio and VHS but the cable industry also had its beginnings in piracy. Cable companies, which at the beginning simply plucked broadcast signals out of the air and resold them elsewhere, were sued by broadcasters. I forget if it was court-fashioned or Congress-fashioned but the result was compulsory licensing. The broadcasters didn't like it but they had no choice. Imagine if the broadcasters had won? We'd still be watching Topper.

The difference between then and now is CBS, NBC and ABC no longer are companies in their own right. They merely are subsidiaries of huge multinationals that have political clout that was unheard of when the cable industry wore diapers. The same can be said of all the important TV, radio, recording, publishing, film companies etc that are fighting tooth and nail against today's version of the nascent cable industry.

This time they have the money to buy Congress (that's right - buy it) and they are winning. What was your favorite Topper episode??
