You do realize that it was proprietary drivers for a printer that started rms on the "Free Software" road, don't you? Granted, rms has no control over the Linux kernel - that's Linus' and Andrew's baby. But if you ever want to see rms have a coronary, let Linus finally agree with the graphics adapter industry and say that proprietary drivers, even with direct hooks into the kernel, are fine and totally ok.

The common belief is that the real reason the graphics vendors want to keep their drivers proprietary is that with the vast amount of patents in the industry, with its competive nature and the relative lack of cross-licensing agreements, the lawsuit gates would be opened and the entire industry would come to a standstill - MAD (mutually assured destruction, for the acronym-impaired). If the vendors would release all their hardware specs, they'd be inviting the lawsuit onslaught.
