Used most of them....
I've used Wordstar, WP 5.0 5.1 5.2(windows)WP 6.0 for DOS (the best!) and Windows, 6.2 for Windows; MS Word 2.0, 97 - XP, WP 7 - 9, and the Corel WP for Linux when it came out a couple of years ago. (I've also used Open Office, StarOffice, and Amipro, Quark and Pagemaker.)

I am an IT person, having migrated 18 years ago from being a secretary with a screwdriver to being a full time IT network/desktop worker. My point - I do like WP the best for overall word processing use. I am currently evaluating Linux and the newer versions Open Office, Star Office, and have reinstalled my old but very trusty COREL WP for Linux build as a lower cost experiment for my office.

The major sticking point is basically this - most of my companies clients use the MS suite. We have to have full integration within the RFP's that we reply to. So until the Feds switch, most smaller companies cannot. Most high schools now only teach the MS suite, (and that's what I want my children to know - so they can be competitive in the workforce.)

I am not very wild about the MS suite. It's bloated, expensive, unpredictable, unhappy with large complex documents, and I want my Reveal Codes! To correct a document that has had it's formatting gone astray can be an hour's task... OK - enough MS Office bashing (for now).

Corel's WP Suite for Linux was wonderfull - it has installed like a champ on every build of Linux I've tried (and I've tried many.) The build of Linux was a nice tight build as well. I am very glad to see Corel re-examining WP for Linux.

Sadly though, until WP (and the other office productivity suites) can seamlessly integrate into the MS apps, they will continue to remain in a niche market.

I close with "Beta was better than VHS" as a reminder that better is not always the winner.
