Why does an email client matter?
The rest of your message aside, I have to ask:

Why in the world would you think it's a *good* thing to have an email client?

What's the benefit gained from including an email client in the "suite"?

I'm wracking my brain, and I can't think of any. And especially not for Outlook, which has a wildly complex and inconsistent user interface and is radically insecure. (Oh, sure, you can use MS Word as your email editor. But I've yet to have anyone explain to me why that would be a good thing.)

Mind, this is a separate issue from the merits of Outlook, itself. It's true that there are relatively few Linux alternatives to Outlook that support such things as calendaring and shared folders -- three, to be precise: Ximian's solution (which integrates Evolution with whatever backend components are required), Lotus Notes (clumsy and expensive, but still in most important regards far superior to Exchange+Outlook), and the currently-Beta Novell GroupWare [nee WordPerfect GroupWare].

And with Linux, you've actually got the bases pretty well covered, there, from a systems integration persective. GroupWare still has huge penetration in municipal and education markets (as a holdover from the old WordPerfect days), which are also going to be big areas for early LInux desktop expansion. Notes is still important in high-tech -- especially aerospace and security-conscious BigCorps. And Ximian Evolution can be jiggered to work just fine with most Exchange configurations -- and then centrally managed, so you only have to do the jiggering once.
