I'd say IM is usually safer than email - yes, it can be used for malicious purposes - just like email! I'd say companies probably spend a lot more time cleaning up after email viruses than they do cleaning up after an IM breach.

Both problems can be almost eliminated by using common sense and practicing safe computing.
