MS's problem
While I agree with you that I would rather MS wait and release a secure and stable OS, that causes a big problem for MS. That problem is Linux.

Essentially, MS was a moving target when they were releasing a new OS every 2-3 years. XP has been out now for what, 3 years? The next OS won't be out for at least 1 and probably more like 2 years. That means that Linux, which is already evolving faster than MS Windows, will have had a total window of about 5 years to play catch-up. Security in Linux is already more robust than any current MS offering, and seems likely to remain so.

In the absence of anything new from MS, more people will be willing to experiment with Linux. The majority of those people will find Linux sufficient to meet their computing needs. That means that Longhorn will need to be SIGNIFICANTLY better than previous MS offerings and whatever Linux distros are out. If it isn't, MS is in serious trouble.

Warren Buffet was unwilling to invest in MS because there is little loyalty among users. If I were in BG's shoes, I'd be at least a little worried.
