You discussed old and commonplace standards that are useful because they are generally available. While it is possible for a general standard to be owned by a single company, some standards are not worth owning.

Then you discussed elaborate applications, incorporating a large (perhaps excessive) number of ideas. I doubt many would think of patenting PhotoShop and that the response would be encouraging.

There are thousands of ideas which have qualified for patents. Some seem obvious, some trivial, some long-known.

I do not know what the percentage of dross to gold might be. I'll leave that to the "patent trolls", who don't seem disappointed.


I didn't think I'd persuade you, but there's value in discussion. I don't think I performed any amputations on you, but then I didn't expect to do so.
