His letter complained that people were stealing copies of his software. He said that as soon as he had ther income from honest people he would hire 10 good programmers to make the best (hobbyist) software anyone ever saw.

He knew that the prevention of theft was essential to the software industry. He knew from the start he made money by protecting the value of ideas.

And I think he was smart enough to know that if someone replicated his software in different code, the action was still theft.
