Yes, winners like to keep their gains.
I disagree, though, that Bill Gates considers innovation "a threat to his company."

He defines innovation as having his company's software do things it did not do previously. That's how he sells the same product again.

And even invention is not a threat. Microsoft can buy inventions and make a substantial profit on the purchase price.

The comparison with Rockefeller works here, too. John D. Rockefeller was glad to pay premium prices for refineries with new ideas for efficiencies. Spread across his system, the purchase would pay for itself in a short time.
