Suppose another company used the same ideas...
... to produce entirely different but equally reliable and robust machine code that fulfilled the same purpose.

And suppose that this competitive... parasite spent as little of its revenues on R&D as, say, Dell.
(Using Dell as a parallel, and not to imply criticism.)

Then the competitor would be able to sell the equivalent product for a lower price because the investment had been made by the originating company.

In that case, the originating company would be at a disadvantage because of its investment. And that's a situation patents are intended to prevent.

To motivate inventors, patents lead to profit by involving the government in protecting ideas from "theft".



By the way, "reliable and robust" are only two aspects of why code can sell well, and not necessarily the most significant.

You know many examples in which better code in some ways proved less popular for other reasons.

Every factor which contributes to sales is important.
