The Rockefellers and Gates build huge and powerful organizations... until law catches on and catches up.

You'll notice that the people most in favor of closing off open range were the ones who grabbed it up while it was open.

The Rockefellers aren't hurting now that they have theirs -- however, they do push for policies that make it harder for anyone else to repeat the trick.

Likewise, Gates (who spoke eloquently on how software patents would prevent innovation) now lobbies for them -- since innovation is a threat to his company.
