"Because their prosperity relies entirely on ideas"
Not so. Their prosperity relies entirely and solely upon enacting (writing), selling, distributing, and supporting software that embodies ideas. They are, in fact, SOFTWARE companies. Their job and its concomitant reward is to embody those ideas into reliable and robust machine code.

We can all argue endlessly that certain, well known, companies have accomplished this rather poorly but prospered very well. This is mostly due to the software "patents" that they hold that prevents others from creating value by, perhaps, creating better and more robust machine code.
